What Deliverance is Not

According to Ken Fish, here are four things that deliverance is not.

1. Deliverance is not exorcism.

  • Exorcism is defined as a series of scripted prayers and rituals, particularly within the Roman and Orthodox churches.
  • Deliverance, in contrast, relies on the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority of believers rather than on set rituals.
  • Deliverance is not about using specific “Deliverance Prayers” but understanding your authority and using your own language to command demons to leave

2. Deliverance is not dealing with “New York Times demons.”

  • “New York Times demons” are described as those that are referenced in mainstream media, such as an article or an obituary.
  • They are related to intellectualized arguments or “sophisticated” reasons or logic to explain something.
  • These types of issues are not seen as demonic in nature. * Instead, demonic entities are described as having their own will and mind and are not merely a perturbation of the human consciousness.

3. Deliverance is not self-deliverance

  • Self-deliverance is the idea that a person can cast demons out of themselves.
  • The nature of deliverance is that it is for those who are in bondage and seeking freedom, and those who are held captive cannot free themselves.
  • The speaker asserts that the concept of self-deliverance is rooted in a lack of experience and understanding of the scriptures, and that there is not one example of self-deliverance in the Bible.
  • Deliverance typically occurs when believers minister to other believers..
  • While God can sovereignly deliver people, most deliverance occurs through the hands of believers ministering to others.

4. Deliverance is not an extension of inner healing or other similar techniques.

  • Deliverance is distinct from inner healing, healing of memories, Sozo, or other techniques like RTF or Immanuel prayer.
  • These practices address wounds in the soul, emotions, and memories, whereas deliverance addresses a “third party presence” that should not be there.
  • Inner healing, etc. can help “undermine” or weaken demons, but do not replace deliverance as the means of expelling them.
  • Demons will not “drift away” after inner healing, and they must be driven out.
  • Ken emphasizes that when deliverance is what is needed, nothing else will substitute
