How Can We Help?
Lying Wonders
Ken Fish discusses lying wonders in the Old Testament, drawing examples from the book of Exodus and his personal experience in Africa to illustrate the nature of the occult and its deceptive power. He also reviews several scriptures from the Old Testament that forbid occult practices.
- Lying Wonders in Exodus: Fish explains that during the time of Moses and Aaron, God performed miracles such as turning a staff into a snake, turning the Nile to blood, and bringing a plague of frogs. The Egyptian magicians and sorcerers were able to replicate these miracles through their “secret arts”. Fish notes that these were counterfeit miracles and that the magicians were not able to keep up with the power of God, as they could not replicate plagues four through ten. From this, Fish says we learn that the occult is always fake and can never truly match the power of God. However, he also notes that the occult can sometimes outdo ill-equipped Christians who do not understand the spiritual forces at play.
- Power Encounter in Africa: Fish shares an experience from his ministry in Uganda where, as he and other ministers were preaching, 16 witch doctors entered the meeting area. He describes that as the witch doctors entered, they were stopped as if by a force field, and then were immediately knocked to the ground. He says that 14 of the witch doctors were instantaneously delivered from evil spirits, and the remaining two were set free by the prayer team. All 16 were baptized shortly after. This story demonstrates that there is a level of power encounter in spiritual warfare, and he draws parallels to the story in Exodus with the rods, the Nile turning to blood, and the frogs
- Old Testament Scriptures Against the Occult: Fish references several Old Testament scriptures that explicitly forbid occult practices. These scriptures, he says, were known by both Jesus and Paul and should guide our understanding and actions in spiritual warfare. Here are some of the scriptures and the lessons we can learn from them:
- Exodus 22:18: “You shall not permit a sorceress to live”. Fish emphasizes that God is deadly serious about the occult and does not want it among his people. He says that although we do not put people to death today, there is often a spirit of death associated with those who engage in the occult.
- Leviticus 19:31: “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God”. He says that evil spirits are called unclean spirits, and this verse shows that they come from such occult activity. He adds that there is a direct link between violating this commandment and becoming spiritually unclean.
- Leviticus 19:26: “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes.”. This verse connects the act of eating blood with occult practices and fortune telling. Fish notes that this prohibition is also found in the New Testament in Acts 15. He also connects digestive problems with eating blood.
- Leviticus 20:6: “If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people”. This scripture uses strong language describing occult engagement as “whoring,” indicating a spiritual violation. Fish says that the spirit of death is in operation when people get into this stuff.
- Leviticus 20:27: “A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones”. Fish notes that this strict penalty is because evil spirits often jump on the closest person when someone dies, and stoning creates a contamination zone to prevent the spread of evil.
- Deuteronomy 13:1-5: This passage warns against false prophets and dreamers who might perform signs or wonders to lead people away from God to serve other gods [1:26:00, 1:26:15, 1:26:21, 1:26:27, 1:26:32, 1:26:39, 1:26:45, 1:26:50, 1:26:57]. Fish explains that God allows this to test the faithfulness of believers [1:26:32, 1:26:39, 1:26:45]. The penalty for leading people away is also death [1:26:57, 1:27:03].
- Deuteronomy 18:9-12: This passage explicitly forbids any involvement in divination, fortune-telling, sorcery, charming, mediumship, or necromancy. It states that anyone who does these things is an abomination to the Lord. Fish notes that God drove out nations because of these practices, and this is a warning to America.
- Isaiah 8:19-20: This scripture warns against consulting mediums and necromancers. Fish explains that Isaiah’s day, occult behavior was mixed with proper Jewish practice. He says that, people should inquire of God, and not the dead on behalf of the living. He also states that those who do not speak according to the word of God have no light in them.
These scriptures reveal that God’s stance against the occult is clear and consistent. Fish says that those who engage in occult practices open themselves up to spiritual dangers and that such activity can contaminate a society. He emphasizes that Christians should be aware of these dangers and avoid any form of occult involvement
