Insights on Lord’s Prayer

5 key insights on the Lord’s Prayer by Ken Fish.

  • God as Father: Fish emphasizes that calling God “Father” is more than just a title; it signifies a right of access and intimacy with God, as Jesus himself approached him. This familial relationship implies that we are accepted and that God is happy to hear from us. This is not just a generic term, but a personal connection point that mirrors how Jesus himself relates to God.
  • Hallowing God’s Name: Fish explains that “hallowed” means to make holy or consecrate. We are to set God’s name apart as special and approach Him with the expectation of entering His presence to make specific requests. This should extend beyond prayer to how we carry ourselves, recognizing that we bear God’s presence.
  • The Kingdom’s Coming: Praying for the Kingdom to come is about more than a future event. It is about God’s rule and reign becoming a present reality in our lives. As sons and daughters of God, we are to be in “business” with the Kingdom, carrying it with us, and experiencing its dynamic activity in our daily lives, not just in the distant future.
  • Daily Bread: Praying for daily bread is about trusting God for our daily sustenance and not worrying about provision. This prayer is meant to activate God’s intention for our provision, echoing the idea of seeking first the Kingdom, and trusting that everything else will be provided. Making the Kingdom a priority allows us to stop worrying about our needs, because God will meet them.
  • Forgiveness: Forgiveness is not just a cognitive recognition of being forgiven through Jesus’s death. It’s about experiencing the release, the warmth of God’s love, and understanding that we are no longer bound by our sins, or the sins of others against us. Furthermore, we must actively forgive others to allow the flow of God’s power in our lives. Holding onto unforgiveness restricts our ability to be a channel of blessing. Forgiveness must flow both to us and from us.
