Getting Egypt out of You and Healing

This metaphor, drawn from the Exodus narrative, signifies the removal of bitterness, cynicism, anger, and other negative residues from one’s past. These negative emotions and experiences can act as internal obstacles, hindering the flow of God’s healing power. Ken Fish asserts that all people carry “stuff” inside that consists of the broken edges of life, jagged personalities, cynicism and criticism, anger towards people, feeling life is unfair, and feeling like God hasn’t treated them fairly.

Story of Mara: In Exodus 15, the Israelites, after leaving Egypt, encounter bitter water at a place called Mara. The water was undrinkable until Moses threw a log into it, making it sweet. Fish uses this story to illustrate that God often uses difficult situations to reveal and address issues within us. Mara, meaning “bitter,” symbolizes the bitterness of life and the internal baggage people carry.

God’s Covenant as Healer: Following the resolution of the bitter water issue, God makes a covenant with the Israelites, promising to protect them from the diseases of Egypt if they diligently listen to His voice, do what is right in His eyes, give ear to His commandments, and keep His statutes. In this covenant, God identifies Himself as “the Lord your healer”. This is the fourth time God’s name is revealed in the bible. Fish emphasizes that this demonstrates God’s intention to heal and sustain His people, provided they follow His ways.

Healing is not just a physical phenomenon but also a spiritual and emotional process. To fully receive God’s healing, one must actively work to remove the “Egypt” within, addressing the bitterness and negative patterns that block the flow of divine power. The story of Mara highlights God’s willingness to transform bitterness into sweetness, symbolizing the comprehensive healing He offers. The covenant emphasizes that obedience and a right relationship with God are essential conditions for experiencing His healing promises
