Intercession – D.L. Moody

Ken Fish, in his presentation “Occult Spiritual Warfare,” shares a story about D.L. Moody and his intercessor to illustrate the importance of prayer in spiritual warfare.

• D.L. Moody’s Ministry: Fish explains that before D.L. Moody would go to a location to hold a crusade, he would send an intercessor ahead of him. This was in the early 20th century, when people generally did not have a supernatural worldview.
• The Intercessor’s Role: The intercessor’s job was to pray and labor for the Lord to break through the spiritual barriers in the area. The intercessor would prepare the spiritual ground so that when Moody arrived, there would be a significant harvest of people coming to faith.
• The Result of Intercession: Because of the intercessor’s prayers, Moody would have incredible results in his evangelistic outreaches. This demonstrates that spiritual preparation is essential for effective ministry.
• Fish uses this story to show that prayer is a crucial component of spiritual warfare, and that intercession can pave the way for the gospel to be received. He notes that even before strategic level warfare was being taught, people like D.L. Moody understood the importance of breaking through in the spiritual realm before engaging in evangelism. He also suggests that individuals should engage in this type of intercession before their next evangelistic outreach so that the power of God would be released and the gospel can go forth effectively
