Deliverance – Need based on Church History

Deliverance is increasingly necessary in the modern church because society is moving away from a Christian worldview. This shift has been happening for centuries, with the secularization of Europe gaining momentum during the French Revolution. A brief historical background leading to our current state:

  • The French Revolution: In 1789, the French Revolution marked a significant move away from Christian values, rejecting the Bible as a foundation for society. While the United States was being established as a constitutional republic based upon the Bible, France was rejecting it
  • Secularization of Europe: Following the French Revolution, Europe began to move away from Christendom, the Christian civilization that had been in place for over a millennium. England, which was once a Christian nation, now has less than one percent of the population attending church on Sundays. Even countries evangelized by the Apostle Paul, such as Greece and Spain, have very low church attendance rates.
  • The United States: The United States was largely Christian until World War II, with the sexual revolution of the late 1960s marking a turning point. The “Summer of Love” in 1967 is cited as a key moment when Christian morality began to be rejected.
  • Decline in Church Attendance: Currently, around 40% of the US population attends church, although this varies regionally, with some areas having much lower rates. This decline in church attendance is indicative of a broader shift away from Christian values and the rise of a pluralistic society.
  • Loss of Knowledge about Deliverance: As Christianity’s influence waned, the knowledge of how to conduct deliverance and deal with demonic activity diminished. During the time of Christendom, demonic activity was largely pushed to the margins of society, and there was little demand for the services of witches or other demonic practices. By the 19th century, few people knew how to cast out demons. Even the Catholic church, which had retained the practice of exorcism, was not actively engaging in it because the things that gave rise to demonic activity were largely absent from society.
  • Modern Society: Today, society is characterized by a pluralistic scene where any and all religious persuasions are accepted. There is a growing fascination with the paranormal. This shift away from a Christian worldview has led to a rise in demonic activity and a need for deliverance.

In summary, the modern need for deliverance is fueled by a long-term trend of secularization, a rejection of Christian values, and a corresponding increase in demonic activity, coupled with a lack of knowledge in mainstream churches about how to address these issues.
