How Can We Help?
Lessons Post – Lord’s Prayer
- Impudence and Persistence in Prayer: Fish explains that the parable of the friend at midnight illustrates the importance of impudence, importunity, and persistence in prayer. He emphasizes that we should not give up easily and should “hang in there” when we pray. The word “impudence” implies a brash boldness that suggests a deep connection, and persistence can lead to breakthrough even when friendship may not be enough. This persistence is not just about asking once but repeatedly.
- The Imperfect Verb ‘Ask’: When Jesus says “ask,” the Greek usage of the verb is an imperfect verb, which means a repeated action in the past or the present. Therefore, it means ask and keep on asking, seek and keep on seeking, and knock and keep on knocking. This highlights the need for continuous, persistent engagement with God in prayer, rather than a one-time request.
- God’s Good Gifts: Fish underscores that God is a good father who will not give us something harmful when we ask for something good. If a son asks for a fish, he will not receive a snake; if he asks for an egg, he will not receive a scorpion. This is a call to confidence in God’s goodness and loving nature as a father. He will not give a “bum deal”, but will always provide good gifts.
- The Holy Spirit: God gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask. This is a key element in fulfilling the mandate He has given us. The Holy Spirit empowers us to do the works of the Kingdom. We can only carry out the mission of the Kingdom with the Spirit working in us.
- Breakthrough Requires Time and Commitment: Fish shares the story of a man with a paralyzed arm, to emphasize that healing may require a time commitment and may not be instantaneous. It might take many attempts at prayer to see the full manifestation of healing, illustrating that persistence is needed to break through.
